Every hiring manager reading your resume is asking the same question before they look at anything else — did this rep hit their number, and by how much? If that answer is not visible in the first five lines of the summary, the resume gets passed over. Sales leaders do not have time to reverse-engineer quota math from vague bullets, and they will not try.

What makes a strong sales representative resume
The strongest sales resumes open with a quota-attainment-first bullet format in the summary and in every role bullet. The five numbers that must appear on a sales rep's resume are: percentage of quota attained (e.g. 128% of $2.4M quota), total dollars closed, number of deals closed, average deal size (ACV or ARR), and average sales cycle length. Leave any of the five off and the reader has to guess — and guessing always lands on the low end. A well-structured bullet reads like a scorecard, not a story.

Common mistakes on sales representative resumes
Six patterns that silently disqualify otherwise-strong candidates.
1. No quota attainment numbers
This is the single biggest mistake on sales resumes and the fastest path to the rejection pile. A bullet that says "consistently exceeded targets" without a percentage attached is worthless — every rep claims to exceed targets. State the quota ($2.4M, $3.8M, $5M), the attainment percentage (108%, 142%, 167%), and the fiscal period. If you missed quota, show the best two years you did hit and stay quiet on the miss unless asked.
2. Vague "built pipeline" claims
"Built a strong pipeline" tells a sales leader nothing. State the dollar value of pipeline sourced ($8M, $18M, $32M), the time period it covers, and the source split (outbound vs marketing vs partner vs expansion). Pipeline without a dollar sign attached is not a sales achievement — it is filler.
3. Missing average deal size and sales cycle
Quota attainment alone does not tell a hiring manager whether you close transactionally or run 9-month enterprise deals. A rep at $1.2M attainment on 40 deals at $30K ACV is a different profile than a rep at $1.2M attainment on 3 deals at $400K ACV. Both numbers — ACV/ARR and sales cycle length — should appear in your summary or under each role.
4. Burying President's Club
President's Club, Circle of Excellence, Chairman's Club, and equivalent top-performer awards are the single most recognized signal in sales hiring. Put them in the top third of the page — either in the summary line ("3-time President's Club winner"), next to your name, or in a dedicated one-line achievements block above Experience. Buried in the middle of a job description they lose 80% of their impact.
5. Listing every methodology taught in training (no proof of application)
A skills block reading "MEDDIC, MEDDPICC, Challenger, SPIN, Sandler, Solution Selling, Value Selling, Gap Selling" signals a rep who sat through workshops but cannot defend any of them under interview pressure. Pick the 2-3 methodologies you actually ran deals with and be ready to walk through an example. Drop the rest.
6. Not segmenting ICP/vertical (SMB vs mid-market vs enterprise)
Sales hiring is tightly segmented by deal band. An SMB AE closing 30-seat deals at $15K ACV is not interchangeable with a mid-market AE at $80K ACV or an enterprise AE at $400K+. Name your ICP segment and vertical explicitly in the summary and every role: "Mid-market SaaS AE selling to VP Marketing at 200-1000 employee B2B companies." Vague ICP language costs callbacks.

- Always show three things together: the quota figure, the dollar amount closed, and the percentage attained, for a specific fiscal period. The strongest format is "Closed $4.2M ARR against $3.5M quota (120% attainment) in FY24" — it gives the reader absolute size, relative performance, and the time window in one line. Avoid percentage-only reporting ("hit 120% of quota") without the dollar context, because a 120% attainment on a $400K quota reads very differently from 120% on $5M.
- President's Club, Circle of Excellence, Chairman's Club, and equivalent top-performer awards should be visible in the top third of the page. The three strongest placements are: (1) in the summary line ("3-time President's Club winner, top 5% of global sales org"), (2) as a single-line achievements block above the Experience section, or (3) as the first bullet of the role in which it was earned. Never bury it at the bottom of the page in an Awards section — it loses most of its signal value there.
- Structure the resume so the AE role gets the top of the page with full quota and attainment metrics, and the SDR role sits below with pipeline-sourced and meetings-set metrics. Keep the SDR bullets focused on the outputs that matter for AE credibility — sourced pipeline dollars, SQO conversion rate, and the AEs you fed — not cold-call volume, which reads as junior.
- Enterprise resumes emphasize deal size, cycle length, complexity, and multi-stakeholder navigation — fewer deals, bigger numbers, longer bullets per deal. Bullets like "Closed a $1.4M 11-month enterprise deal navigating 3 executive sponsors, procurement, InfoSec, and legal redlines" are the pattern. SMB resumes emphasize volume, velocity, and consistency of attainment across high deal counts — "Closed 82 deals averaging $18K ACV at 112% of quota with a 34-day average sales cycle." Use the ICP segment name explicitly in both cases.
- Do not volunteer missed-quota periods on the resume itself — hiring managers expect to discuss them in the interview, not read about them cold. On paper, show the best 2-4 consecutive years of attainment and let fiscal-year gaps speak through the date range. If a missed year is unavoidable because of role continuity, describe the period in role-context terms ("territory rebuild," "post-acquisition account realignment," "new product line ramp") without dwelling on the miss. In the interview, own the number plainly and lead with what you changed afterward.
- No — leave commission, OTE (on-target earnings), and W-2 figures off the resume entirely. They do not belong on a sales resume in any major market. Recruiters will ask for comp expectations in screening calls, and sharing OTE numbers on paper can both anchor you low and read as unprofessional. The exception is when the job posting explicitly requests compensation history (rare, and often illegal to require in US states like California, Colorado, and New York).
