The Noir resume template inverts the default — off-white type on a near-black background — and leans into the portfolio aesthetic that design leaders often carry across every deliverable. The effect is immediate: a recruiter flipping through a stack sees a visually distinct document without any gimmicks. Typography is sans-serif medium-weight, leading is slightly looser than Modern, and there is no colour accent at all — the contrast does all the visual work.

It is the template for candidates whose portfolio is already dark-themed and who want the resume to feel like part of the same deliverable system. Design directors, art directors, senior UX researchers, photographers, video and motion directors all reach for Noir when their applications go to agencies or studios where creative taste is evaluated alongside content.

About the Noir template

Noir inverts the default — off-white type on a near-black background — and leans into the portfolio aesthetic design leaders often carry across every deliverable. The effect is immediate: a recruiter flipping through a stack sees a visually distinct document without any gimmicks. Typography is sans-serif medium-weight, leading is slightly looser than Modern, and there's no color accent at all — the contrast does all the visual work. For print, Noir uses a responsible near-black rather than pure #000 to avoid heavy ink saturation; for on-screen and PDF viewing, it's a signature piece.

Who uses the Noir template

Noir is the right pick for design directors, art directors, brand directors, senior UX researchers, photographers, video and motion directors, and senior creative leads at agencies. It also works well for any candidate whose existing portfolio is dark-themed and who wants their resume to feel like a continuation of that same design system. Skip Noir for traditional industries (law, banking, government) where the inversion reads as oppositional, and for any candidate planning to print on a personal inkjet — the ink cost is genuinely real.

Representative roles

  • Design Director / Head of Design
  • Art Director / Brand Lead
  • Senior UX Researcher / Research Director
  • Photographer / Director of Photography
  • Motion / Video Director
  • Creative Lead (agency or in-house studio)

Best for

  • Design directors and creative leads
  • Art directors and brand leads
  • Senior UX researchers
  • Photographers and video directors
  • Anyone whose portfolio is already dark-themed
  • Agencies submitting team capes

Skip it if

  • Anyone who prints resumes on personal printers (ink cost)
  • Traditional industries, government, law
  • Roles where ATS systems may struggle with inverted contrast PDFs (rare but real)

When to use the Noir template

Pick Noir when your portfolio is already dark-themed and you want the resume to feel like part of the same deliverable system — design directors, art directors, senior UX researchers, photographers, video and motion directors. It's also a strong fit for candidates applying to agencies where creative taste is evaluated alongside content. Skip Noir if you're applying to traditional industries, government, or law; the inversion reads as oppositional. Also skip if you'll print on personal inkjet printers — the ink cost is real. For safer but still design-conscious options, try Minimal or Elegant.

Customising the Noir template

Small tweaks that signal craft without breaking ATS parsing.

1. Use a responsible near-black, not pure #000

Noir ships with #0a0a0a (near-black) for the background, not pure #000. Pure black flattens against the off-white type and flattens into a slab of ink at print resolution. Near-black gives the page subtle depth on screen and prints with less saturation. If you change the background, stay between #0a0a0a and #1a1a1a.

2. Keep all type one weight

Noir's effect comes from the contrast between background and type — not from typographic weight variation. Resist the urge to bold key words in the body or vary section heading weights. One weight throughout (medium or semi-bold) makes the page read as a coherent design system. Mixed weights make it look like a Word document with the colour scheme inverted.

3. If you must add colour, use a single semantic accent

Noir has no colour accent by default and is at its strongest that way. If you genuinely need an accent (say, your portfolio has a single brand colour you want to echo), use it on ONE element only — typically the name or a single section heading underline. Multiple accent uses pull the template into Gradient territory, which is a different design proposition.

Common pitfalls when using Noir

Specific failure modes for this template (different from generic resume mistakes).

1. Printing Noir on a personal inkjet

A full A4 page of near-black background on inkjet uses approximately a $4-6 worth of ink per print. If you'll be printing the resume yourself for handouts at conferences or in-person interviews, switch to Minimal or Classic for those contexts and reserve Noir for the digital PDF you submit through application portals. For lab printing on a quality laser printer, Noir is fine.

2. Using Noir for ATS portals at strict-parser companies

Most modern ATS parsers handle inverted PDFs without issue, but a small minority still flag them as 'unusual format' which can lower the resume's parsing-confidence score even when the text extracts correctly. If you know your target uses an older ATS (some legacy Taleo deployments, older Oracle iRecruitment setups), submit Noir alongside a Classic or Modern alternative just in case.

3. Pairing Noir with a vibrant photo

A coloured photo on a near-black background creates a visual hot-spot that pulls the eye away from the content. If you include a photo (Pro feature on VitaeKit; the photo stays on your device, never on our servers), keep it black-and-white or sepia-toned to maintain the template's coherent design system.

Noir resume template FAQ

Is the Noir resume template ATS-friendly?
Yes — 4/5 on our ATS parsing tests. Single-column reading order and standard fonts both parse cleanly. The 4-instead-of-5 score reflects that a small minority of legacy ATS deployments (older Taleo, older iRecruitment) flag inverted-colour PDFs as unusual format. Modern ATS systems (Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, current Taleo) handle Noir without issue.
What jobs is the Noir resume template best for?
Design leadership (design directors, art directors, brand leads), senior UX researchers, photographers, video and motion directors, and senior creative roles at agencies or studios. It also serves well for candidates applying to portfolio-driven roles where the resume needs to feel like part of the same design deliverable as the work it links to. Skip for traditional industries, government, law, and any role that screens through legacy ATS portals.
Does Noir work for printed handouts at networking events?
Functionally yes; economically poorly. A single Noir page consumes 6-8x the ink of a Classic or Minimal page on inkjet printers. If you are bulk-printing for in-person handouts, use Minimal or Classic for those copies and reserve Noir for the digital submission. Lab-printing on a quality laser printer is fine.
Can I switch back to a light theme inside the editor?
Yes — VitaeKit's editor lets you switch between any of our templates with a single click and your content stays the same. If you want both versions of your resume (Noir for digital portfolio submissions, Minimal for printed handouts), switch templates, export each, and keep both PDFs ready.
